Myth and Truth about Scottish Fold Cats

Myth:

“All Scottish cats suffer from joint disease. They have a stiff tail, and as they get older, their joint problems get worse, so they can’t walk.”

Truth:

Scottish cats do not suffer from joint diseases if they are properly mated (fold+straight). The gene for floppy ears is critical if it is inherited from both the mother and the father. When a kitten receives this gene from both parents, ONLY then does "folds disease" occur - osteochondrodysplasia, which causes thickening and fusion of joints, immobility, and pain. Cats with this disease live poorly and for a short time. But! This was revealed even at the very formation of the Scottish Fold breed, and then they tried to ban this breed. It has not yet been determined that when a fold+straight (straight is a Scottish cat that has straight ears and does not have the fold gene, the gene for floppy ears) is mated, there is no occurrence of osteochondrodysplasia. Therefore, there is a firm rule - Scottish cats are mated only fold+straight.
